Marshall Grant discusses his book I Was There When It Happened, My Life With Johnny Cash

This free program is sponsored by Starkville Reads.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

What better way to kick off a day celebrating the life of Johnny Cash than listening to Marshall Grant read from his book I Was There When It Happened, My Life With Johnny Cash? Marshall Grant played Bass and served as road manager and stage manager for Johnny Cash from the beginning until 1980. Along with Luther Perkin’s, the original Tennessee Two, backed Johnny Cash and developed the legendary boom-chicka-boom sound.

More importantly, Marshall was there to see his friend unravel, and stood by him as he pieced himself back together. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the man that lived through the best and the worst, forging a friendship that lasted until Johnny’s dying day.

“(I)n this book you’ll find out all you ever need to know about the Man in Black from the Man in Back—Marshall Grant, the man who stood beside John on and off stage for decades.” —The Statler Brothers

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

kevin_max_1.jpgKevin Max will sing gospel on November 4 in Starkville to pay tribute to Johnny Cash. Johnny’s sister, Joanne Cash, will also sing gospel her brother enjoyed.

As one-third of dcTalk, Kevin Max has sold over 8 million records worldwide, won four Grammy Awards, and had a Top 40 pop hit with “Just Between You and Me,” which also received significant airplay on VH1 and MTV. Kevin Max returns December 26th with his latest solo album, The Blood – A very personal project that allowed him to step back from his usual rock stylings in favor of a musical exploration of Gospel. This deliberate departure features high profile collaborations with an extraordinary cast, including Vince Gill, Amy Grant, American Idol finalist Chris Sligh, Joanne Cash, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary and a long-anticipated reunion of dcTalk (featuring Max, Michael Tait and TobyMac)! Monday, October 22nd, 2007

jc_brochure_cover.jpgWe now have a great looking new brochure designed by our friends at Blufish Design Studio which includes a complete schedule for all three days of the festival, along with a detailed map so you won’t wander off the beaten path and run afoul of the law. But if you do, just look on the back page for the lyrics to “Starkville City Jail” so you can kill time while your cooling your heels in the infamous Cell Block E.

A printable (white background) version is available on the Festival Schedule of Events page.
